CUISINE
You can start your gastronomical trip with local cheese
ladotiri (λαδότυρι) prepared of sheep milk. What makes
it different is the fact that it is placed in olive oil until it
ripens.
Your next stop may be delicious local wines. It is a tradi-
tion that most families here produce their own wine. But
many locals prefer the spicy white table wine “Verdea”,
which they also call the “Wine of Gods”. Italian word “ver-
dea” means “green”. Its production started around 1800.
One can also taste pasteli (παστέλι) that is made of
sesame, olive oil, water and honey. It is also strongly
recommended to try local almond nougat “mandolato”
(μαντολάτο) that was appreciated by the Venetians who
once visited the island.
