GEOGRAPHY
Kos is the third largest Dodecanese island, after the islands of Rodos
and Karpathos. It is actually located in the center of this group. The
island is 290 square kilometers, while the coastline is up to
112 km. The landscape is anything but homogeneous: if the Southwest-
ern part of the island can be described as hilly, then North, for the most
part, is flat. The highest point of the island is Mount Oromedon or Dikeo
(846 m).
MYTHOLOGY
It is worth remembering that the island’s name remains unchanged
since ancient times. There several theories about its origin. One of them
states that the island owes its name to the daughter of the mythical
king Meropis. The other traces its name from the Carian word “koion”
meaning crab.
WHAT TO SEE
The Knight’s Castle or Nerantzias Castle as it was once known and built
atop of the ruins of an ancient fortress, sits in Kos Town exactly at the
entrance to the port. The construction was begun by the Knights of St.
John in the 14th century but took a considerable time to complete due
to delays caused by Turkish raids.
The island has become world famous due to Hippocrates who was born
in 460 BC in Kos. He is referred to as the “father of medicine” in recogni-
tion of his lasting contributions to the field as the founder of the Hippo-
cratic School of medicine. Hippocrates Platan is a natural miracle which
is more than two thousand years old. They say that it was planted in the
very heart of Kos Town by Hippocrates himself and there he gathered
his followers. Those who have time and wish can visit local Archeologi-
cal museum located in Eleftherias (Freedom) square opposite the neatly
restored Defterdar Mosque.
Kos is very often referred to as «The Island of
Hippocrates» or «the Garden of the Aegean Sea».
Only after visiting it you can understand why.
Picturesque villages scattered across the island,
a variety of architectural monuments, soft sandy
beaches and azure sea in harmony with each
other form a surprisingly magical atmosphere of
this place that attracts many visitors here, who
continue coming back here again and again. An
island that offers something for everyone, an
island where everyday life lives side by side with
its ancient past.
