TRANSPORT
It is not difficult to get there, primarily because of the airport and one
of the largest ports of the Dodecanese group located on the island.
The island’s international airport, named after Hippocrates, welcomes
charter flights from all over Europe. However, the ferries departing from
the island of Kos serve as a connection to the mainland and neighboring
islands.
Municipal and public transport helps you to move around the island. City
buses DEAS serve the capital and its neighboring villages, while the
service KTEL connects the most remote settlements of the island. Ticket
prices may vary depending on the distance. To make a sightseeing tour
around the island one can use the small tourists’ train.
ENTERTAINMENT
Virtually every resort area of the island has its own network of enter-
tainment places. But the main points, of course, are in Kos Town: bars,
restaurants, clubs and discos for all tastes are always open to visitors.
So even during the night there are lots of places to entertain yourself.
Near Mastihari village you can visit local water park “Lido” with numer-
ous attractions and activities. Local sandy beaches attract Caretta-
Caretta sea turtles during their breeding season in summer time. Due
to the fact that this species is under WWF protection, fishing is strictly
prohibited on Kos.
CUISINE
Local cuisine offers menu rich in dishes that have already become part
of the well-known Mediterranean diet. But still Kos have dishes that you
can try only here and nowhere else, e.g. “kokkino tiri” (“κόκκινο τυρί”)
– cheese cooked in red wine, “pittaridia” (“πιταρίδια”) – looks like home-
made noodles, or “giaprakia” (“γιαπράκια”) – stuffed grape leaves. You
can find a wide diversity of dishes from different cultures and traditions.
SOUVENIRS AND SHOPPING
As often happens, many visitors take with them olive oil soap, olive oil,
local wine, or ceramics. In general, for souvenirs it is better to go to
remote villages, among which the village Zia is popular, located in an
area Asfendiu.
